President Linda Mills is one of 12 <\/span>Women of Influence<\/span><\/a> commemorated in Crain\u2019s New York Business\u2019 annual list, which selects a small group of \u201cvisionary leaders\u201d who \u201cdefy convention and provide mentorship to women in their careers and the wider community.<\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span>honoree profile on Mills<\/span><\/a> cites her efforts to bolster NYU\u2019s science and technology, her 2023 <\/span>global listening tour<\/span><\/a> with thousands of students and her \u201cfresh eyes\u201d as the university\u2019s <\/span>first female president<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n Other honorees this year include President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Wendy Stark, New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello and Elle magazine Editor-in-Chief Nina Garcia.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cCrain\u2019s 2025 Women of Influence honorees are leaders in real estate, finance, health care, sports, the nonprofit world and beyond,\u201d the article wrote. \u201cWhether they\u2019re leading billion-dollar enterprises, providing health care or fueling economic growth, these women are not only shaping the present, they\u2019re defining what\u2019s next for New York.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n All honorees were slated for consideration with a <\/span>$50 nomination fee<\/span><\/a>, which can be submitted by anyone \u2014 including the nominees themselves \u2014 before editors hold a series of meetings to determine who will be selected.<\/span><\/p>\n The profile highlights that under Mills\u2019 leadership, NYU\u2019s $1 billion research program made the university the <\/span>top institution for research<\/span><\/a> in New York state<\/span>. It also cites her background as a social worker and founder of NYU\u2019s <\/span>Center on Violence and Recovery<\/span><\/a>, as well as her work in filmmaking and as director of NYU\u2019s Production Lab \u2014 calling Mills a \u201cserious multitasker.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI have learned that I am a builder,\u201d Mills told Crain\u2019s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The profile adds that Mills has been \u201ctested\u201d by current on-campus tensions, including ongoing<\/span> protests against the war in Gaza<\/span><\/a> and a <\/span>lawsuit from three Jewish students<\/span><\/a> claiming the university is indifferent toward antisemitism. It does not include any statement from Mills on the topic.<\/span><\/p>\n Since taking office, Mills has <\/span>faced criticism<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>no-confidence votes<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>calls to resign<\/span><\/a> for her handling of on-campus protests \u2014 including the <\/span>authorization of the arrests<\/span><\/a> of more than <\/span>120 students<\/span><\/a>, faculty and community members last year, <\/span>alleged relations<\/span><\/a> with the leader of a Zionist Facebook group and <\/span>lack of outcry<\/span><\/a> against the Trump administration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Crain\u2019s will hold a two-hour event on Sept. 4 to celebrate the 12 Women of Influence honorees, as well as those nominated in the publication\u2019s Rising Stars and Women-Forward Workplaces categories.
